Day 2 - Mondim de Basto to Quintao

Published on 17 October 2024 at 16:00

Well this morning dawned grey, dull, misty & wet ..... Garmin says we cycled 54.7 miles (89 km) with 3800 ft of ascent and 7 climbs, I'm not sure where Garmin gets its figures from, but it felt like more than that & it also classifies an average of 9% for 776 metres as "Easy".😡‍πŸ’«

Yesterday our last 6/7 miles were on the lovely “Tamega Line” a cycle path that was an old railway line and was used to transport goods, apparently this area was historically known for linen production. This morning we resumed our trek along the cycle path trying to avoid the various obstacles en-route. Because of the amount of rain on essentially very dry soil its just bouncing off and bring boulders and the like with it!

The sun came out briefly followed by a biblical downpour, we were so wet.  Following on from last years trip to France, I  did splash out (pardon the pun) on a new jacket which has proved to be an incredibly good investment πŸ˜πŸ‘

No wild dogs today fortunately- we did see a couple but over the other side of a busy road, I was very happy for them to stay there and avoid us!    Today autumn showed it's magnificent colours, simply beautiful. We are staying this evening in a lovely place next to the river Duoro which is huge, very wide and fast flowing.

We have passed vineyards forming orderly lines on the sides of the hills, the leaves turning from green to golden to brown.

I have no idea where the company find these hotels, but the location yesterday was stunning and today is the same for very different reasons.

The vineyards ascending the hills, the odd goat 🐐, orange 🍊 & olive trees all looking resplendent in a watery sort of sun are a joy to look at.   Here's hoping for some better weather for Day 3, I'm now off to try and dry out my cycle shoes & a very soggy bottom 😳🀣 thank you for reading and I'll see you tomorrow x

There was an episodes of an 80s TV program called The Flumps where PootleFlump was followed by a rain cloud…I’m beginning to think you may be the modern day cycling version β›ˆοΈπŸ˜‚
