Today was a shorter one—just 52 miles (84 km)— it was hilly π³. We climbed about 4,800 ft (1400 metres), and according to Garmin, that means only 9 climbs. Sure, Garmin. π
Oh, and in case I forgot to mention—it’s been wet. Like, really wet. I actually resorted to using a hairdryer on my shoes last night π§. My socks? Wrapped up in plastic bags. And gloves? Honestly, easier to just shove them on wet and deal with peeling them off later. If anyone has some genius hacks for drying stuff out, I’m all ears—seriously, send help π.

Some people had an absolutely epic day today π€©, but for me? Let’s just say it was a bit of a struggle. That’s life though, right? Straight out of the hotel this morning, it was cold and wet π§οΈ, and within the first 1km BAM—straight into a climb. My Garmin flashed up an incline of 28% for about 60-70 meters, and wow, on cold legs, that was a wake-up call π³. Once we got through that, it was a bit of a rollercoaster—some descents, then about 15-18 miles of flat riding along the Tavoro River, battling a headwind π¬οΈπ΄βοΈ. Thankfully, there was a very welcome coffee stop to recharge before we tackled a 9.74 km climb with an average 5% gradient. Yeah, fun times, right? π€―π³π₯΅
Nigel from Sydney kept me company on that climb, and honestly, it made such a difference. We had a good chat, took a couple of photo breaks, and just kept pushing through. Once we found our rhythm, it wasn’t so bad. The gradients? Doable. So, massive shoutout and THANK YOU to Nigel! Sometimes, it’s just about getting through the tough bits, and a few kind words and a bit of encouragement can make all the difference. Tomorrow’s a new day, and who knows? Might just be amazing ππ΄βοΈπ.

Let's talk about food! π²π We’ve been enjoying some fantastic meals over the past few days, and we’re hoping to keep the streak going! π Yesterday, Mike, one of our amazing guides, prepared a picnic lunch that was nothing short of delightful. We had fresh rolls, juicy chicken, crisp salad, and a mouthwatering coconut cake. To top it off, he somehow arranged for the rain to pause just in time for us to enjoy our meal. A big thumbs up to Mike for both the food and the perfect timing! π
Last night’s dinner setting was pure magic—it felt like stepping into a scene from Harry Potter π§β¨. The table was beautifully arranged, and the room featured a grand fireplace, perfect for cozying up with a roaring fire on chilly winter evenings. Truly enchanting!

Lunch today was nothing short of incredible! Tucked away in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, the place was absolutely packed. There were no menus—just pure, hearty, home-cooked goodness. You simply ate whatever was being served, and let me tell you, it was absolutely delicious. π The options on the table? Incredibly tender, massive pork ribs or perfectly cooked fish served with chips and/or rice. For dessert, you could choose between a rich slice of cake or a refreshing fruit salad—exactly what we needed after a tough, energy-draining morning.
A not-so-glamorous shot of me tackling one of the climbs in the drizzle. At least the jacket was on point! ππ

After an eventful afternoon of being chased and followed by dogs, tackling a few more climbs, enduring a bit of drizzle, and receiving a wonderfully warm welcome from Seb at the brew stop, tonight’s accommodation is a convent (because, why not?). So, it's time to be on our best behavior—no cursing or mischief—dust off your best bib and tucker for the occasion! ππ
Thank you for following along. Wishing you a lovely evening, and let's all hope the rain clears up soon! π§οΈπ xx

Thank you, I think Iβll come home 2 sizes larger π x
My goodness- sounds more like sailing than cycling with all that water around. I hope you get some brighter weather soon. Such diversity in food and accommodation. Itβs an amazing experience. If anyone can dig deep Wendy itβs you. Keep on battling x
lolβ¦.π I could certainly do with some flippers π€£
Another amazing day of achievement!
I love the idea of the food but the hills put me off !
Sounds like a great company to travel with?
Itβs all good once you get going - honest π³
Well done looks amazing
Thank you, itβ is amazing π€©
Well amazing food helps, a really though day but yeah I do hope the rain stops. But you can do it βΊοΈ
Thank you, the food is amazing and definitely helps x
I feel for you, especially that first climb which was an absolute killer - most of our group got off and walked! Tomorrow is another dayπ€
Thanks Sara, a lot of people did get off and walk. Tomorrow is another day & Iβm sure for me will be a lot better ππ΄ββοΈ
Oh Wendy I feel for you. Some good bits ie the foodl and wine and some less enjoyable that we wonβt go into. The βHarry Potterβ dining room looks amazing are all of Hogwarts on your trip?
Dxβ€οΈ
Iβm not sure all of Hogwarts are on the trip π but you could almost expect one of the house elves to pop out & serve you something out!
Great day Wendy β€οΈ
Thank you for your comment, it was an excellent day π
Maybe βSister Wendyβ needs to say a few prayers whilst in the convent to the rain Gods π€π π€π»you get a dry day todayπ
lolβ¦.. probs be a good idea ππ was also thinking of doing a rain dance π
Only suggestions I can think of - newspaper in the shoes ASAP and changed at least once. When I wash stuff I get as much water out as poss, then one by one, lay items out (driest or least wet first) out on a towel - roll up and wring out. Sounds like a great landscape - top quality food - shame about the weather. Kudos WendyB βοΈ
Thanks Richard, newspaper not available so towels used instead. I need to check out these Boulders they are very random & amazing! The food is wonderful & Iβm sure the Weather will improve soon π€
It sounds like a challenging day with all that incline β¦ I cannot believe Garmins states thatβs the equivalent of 9 climbs β¦ sounds like they missed a 0 off and it should be 90 π€£
Iβm praying π you have some drier weather!
The views look amazing! You must have had some amazing food and your description in the evening meal has got me very hungry!
Sounds like that feast was timed to perfection with the challenges you have all faced!
If anyone can do this you can! Youβve got this!
Thank you Sean, you really are very kind. Todayβs climbs were longer but easier so that was good. Iβm also praying for drier weather so that we all enjoy Portugal π΅πΉ I hope you and FlΓ‘vio have a wonderful time, enjoy x
Hope it stops raining for you, looks like fantastic views.
Thank you Lou, the views are incredible & would be even better when it stops raining x
