Giggleswick to Ripon

Published on 5 July 2024 at 15:07

42 miles (58km) 3877 ft (1181 m) of Ascent today has been awesome ๐Ÿคฉ

We woke this morning to blue skies & much less wind, what's not to like โ˜€๏ธ One thing that has struck me today are the big skies, they are beautiful and not something we experience in the part of the country we live in ๐Ÿ˜

Giggleswick is lovely and at the bottom of a blooming great big hill ๐Ÿ˜ฑ some of it at 20% - yikes ๐Ÿ˜ง so the first 4 1/2 kms was up a hill before the legs had a chance to warm up, interestingly the first 100 or so metres was on cobbles.  I'm so glad it isn't raining ๐ŸŒง๏ธ, slippy cobbles  and a big climb not a great combo on cold muscles ๐Ÿฆต

So a good breakfast of a poached egg & bacon on an English muffin & copious amounts of coffee the order of the day ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿ˜‹

Awesome landscapes, BIG climbs of  18, 19 & 20%.  You know you are going slowly weaving up a hill when your garmin goes onto autopause ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Today was tough in terms of elevation, but epic and thoroughly enjoyable, even better when you do it with good friends ๐Ÿ˜, the weather was kind, lunch was superb & now we are in Ripon.   We are all proud of what we achieved today, no bike/hiking for us, we had a lot of heavy breathing, probs a few curses & a lot of puffing & panting but we did it! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’ช

The downhill into Pateley Bridge was amazing as much as it was scary, the guides had warned us about it & they were right to do so, I think new brake pads are needed on my bike ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. Going through the deer park at Fountain Abbey was amazing ๐Ÿ˜ป A long straight road downhill ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿšด‍โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ

Recovery needed before the trip to Pocklington tomorrow.

thank you for reading & I'll see you tomorrow x

Thanks Kaz, there may have been the odd profanity ๐Ÿคฌ when you go round a bend & find out you are still going up!

Your blogs are fab - remember those cobbles, Portugal is full of them in every little village. As you say lethal in the wet. Glad you got fine weather - the thought of rain doesnโ€™t inspire me. Looking forward to tomorrow xx

Sounds like you had a great day and the weather has been kind to you. Well done with the ascents. Ripon is a lovely city bet you didnโ€™t have time to go to the Cathedral did you?

Thank you Doreen, we havenโ€™t had time to go to the cathedral, we saw it from a distance and it looks amazing, itโ€™s such a beautiful part of the country. We are stopping in York for lunch tomorrow so hoping to have a look round if we get chance xx

Why is it that your rides always sound so much more exciting than mine? (And don't say because they are!!!)

Wendy
