We arrived in Alcantara quite early yesterday. The weather was glorious, it would seem we all had the same idea about taking an opportunity to do some washing! I thought this photo that was taken was quite funny ππ
Alcantara is a lovely little town, famous for a bridge built by the Romans with 6 symmetrical arches, 191 metres long & 70 m high (approx). The convent San de Benito is approx 16th century & is currently undergoing some renovation.
We set off this morning with the obligatory uphill start ππ΄βοΈ, the weather was lovely, one of those days when there is a slight nip in the air and the colour of the sky promises that it will be warm later. The route this morning for the first 4 or 5 miles was an undulating, straight road across what I presume are the Spanish Plains. A little tedious imo, so I stopped to take a picture of a tree. (As you do π)I also started singing πΆ I can see for miles & miles .....by the Who, I thought about The long & winding road..... by Paul McCartney but as the road wasn't winding I gave up with that! π
Lunch was lovely, Spanish tortilla with salad, it was delicious. This afternoon we made our way to Marvao, it is apparently in the #1 New York Times book, of the top 1000 places to visit before you die! It will be interesting to see what it's like later when we get there π.
For anyone that follows me on Strava, you will know my hill climbing is not fast, definitely not pretty, but I do get there eventually π. This week, I have managed to get into the top 10 on a climb, Kim T who is No. 1 on the list is also on this ride and is an awesome cyclist, in the grand scheme of things it's not important but it feels good ππ΄βοΈπ΄βοΈπ
Today we have cycled 59.7 miles (81.7 km) 4,364 ft (1,330 m) of ascent. We are just over 1/2 way & have done approx 368 miles, (576 km) & 29,500 ft (8980 m) of ascent. Not to shabby πππ΄βοΈ.
Getting to Marvao did involve a 5 km climb up a big hill π₯΅ I've added a picture & have put a big blue arrow on where I'm staying tonight. I'm going to explore & find out if it should be on the top 1000 places to visit before you die π π.
Thank you for reading & have a lovely evening xx

Another fascinating and funny blog to read tonight.
The βalternativeβ washing line made me laugh out loud π€£π€£ Alcantara looks like a lovely place to visit. You are now past the half way mark does that mean it is all downhill from now on ha ha
Thanks Doreen, I thought the washing was so funny, couldnβt resist mentioning it π. Unfortunately not all downhill, still a few more climbs to go xx
Ooh how I laughed at your tales of singing- Love it. That is one big hill you are on the top of! You are smashing those climbs. Top 10 is awesome. Well done. Keep the bloggs coming- Iβm anticipating a book soon π

Well done on the hill climbs they look tough to me enjoy the weather as well as the food the places you are going to are really of the beaten track but look lovely in the photos
I started with Climb Every Mountain on the Munich to Rome trip, which works well. Sheβll Be Coming Round the Mountain works well when itβs not too steep! Am loving reliving the trip through your eyes! Hope the rest of the week is as stunning and the weather stays in your favour
lol..,,Sara, Iβll remember that song for M2R next year! I know you know exactly which bit of road I am referring to - at least the surface was smooth π
Im so glad to see blue skies in all these pics! The views look incredible!
Wow half way and what an achievement getting in the top 10!!
The Roman bridge and convent look stunning. Itβs a shame they were renovating β¦ Iβm defo adding a few of these places onto my to do list for when Iβm travelling around Portugal π΅πΉ DEFO by car π€£
Hope you have a lovely evening meal and canβt wait to read tomorrows next adventure!
Thanks Sean, Monsanto, Marvao & Alcantara (I know itβs in Spain, but itβs well worth the visit) should definitely be on you list
Glad the sun is out and your clothes are dry. Great hill climbing. Looking forward to hearing why Alcantara so special.
Thank you Bridget, looks like you are also having a wonderful time in India- hope to catch up when we are both back in England
