Day 4 - Korcula History, E-bikes & Gravel

Published on 17 September 2024 at 15:48

Having arrived in Korcula yesterday after lunch, the weather was glorious so we all took a ride to the beach.  Beautifully clear water and a lovely sandy beach πŸ–οΈ - perfect πŸ‘Œ we rode back to the ship left the bikes & had a guided walking tour of the Old Town. The Croatians claim that Marco Polo was born here, the Venetians would tell a different story! Apparently there is no birth certificate so no one actually knows, however he is buried in Venice.

Historically the Old Town is fascinating. It dates back to the 13th/14th Century.   On one side of the main thoroughfare the narrow streets are curved on the other they straight. All the streets are offset (a sort of dogleg). It was built this way to allow for the prevailing winds to cool it during the summer and limit the impact of the weather during the winter! Amazing.  The windows of the houses are at different heights and offset to respect people's privacy! It would seem we could learn a lot from these peoples history!

A wonderful evening out & back to the ship, because of the pending storm, Storm Boris I believe. A lot of ships are in the port & we are lucky enough to be moored next to a 24/7 party ship πŸΊπŸ»πŸ₯‚πŸΉπŸΈπŸ₯ƒπŸ·πŸΎ ! joy of joys! Especially at 2 am when everyone on said party ship came back from a club!

Today we hired e-bikes.  We had a full day with a lot of climbing & a mix of road surfaces, so we figured e-bikes would allow us to enjoy the views. Our guide was determined to do the planned ride, given the uncertainty about the weather it was a bit of a risk it & see. I am so pleased we did 😊 the whole trip was enjoyable, getting to the top of a climb without being hot, sweaty and out of breath.   Saying that I would like to give it another go on my road bike 🚴‍♀️.

For me today will be remembered for a dog rescue, the smell of Jasmine at the top of one of the climbs. Pomegranates, Olives, Limes & Figs all growing at the sides of the road. I am assuming from the road signs that Wild Boar are also a thing in the area.

Due to the uncertainty with weather we are staying in Vela Luka tonight and will find out tomorrow morning if we can sail to the next destination or not 🀷‍♀️ Thank you for reading & I'll see you tomorrow xx

The history of this place is amazing. TBH I’m not sure I would want to join a party, πŸŽ‰ πŸ₯‚ I like to be tucked up in bed by 10 with my coca & a good book πŸ˜‚

I could see a QOM incoming if one of those wild boars decided to give chase πŸ˜‚

If I saw a wild boar, I’m not sure I’d need a bike for a QOM πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
